Designers receive grants from Aurora Design Fund

Earlier this month the first grants from the Aurora Design Fund where handed out to several Icelandic designers. 7 grants where handed out to 7 different designers, in all eleven million krona and also two grants to two different collaborations, in all 1,5 million krona. The Fund was founded earlier this year by The Aurora Foundation.

The Funds purpose is to support those designers who excel in there work, to strengthen the grass root in design and to become a place of ideas and creative thinking in Icelandic design. With this, the Fund supports new development and start ups in Iceland. The receiving designers this year were Hugrun Arnadottir, Magni Þorsteinsson, Jon Bjornsson, Gudrun Lilja Gunnlaugsdottir, Katrin Olina, Linda Bjorg Arnadottir, Sara Maria Juliusdottir and Vik Prjonsdottir. The collaborations were the design exhibition “Icelandic Design 2009” and the Lettering of Gunnar Þ. Vilhjalmsson. More grants will be handed out this fall.

The annual Iceland Airwaves music festival begins in central Reykjavík tonight and will last until Sunday. Around 4,500 people are expected to attend the festival this year, 1,800 of whom are foreign visitors.

Icelandic National Day - June 17, 1944, was chosen as the day that The Republic of Iceland (Lýðveldið Ísland) was formed. Iceland had formerly been under Danish rule. The formation of the republic repealed the 1918 Act of Union.

Due to Denmark being occupied by German forces and Iceland by the British at the time, Denmark did not have as much influence over Iceland and, mainly for simplicity, allowed the country its complete independence, which included the rewriting of the Icelandic constitution and the transformation of Iceland into a republic. The people of Iceland celebrated, and praised Jón Sigurðsson (1811–1879) and Sveinn Björnsson, who became the first president of independent Iceland. More on wikipedia.
